Better Late Than Never!

Designing for Spring 2018 was probably the most creatively challenging season I’ve ever had! I usually have an idea of the statement pieces I want to create for Spring by November or December of the previous year, but come January…nothing. February…crickets. It really wasn’t until March that I got a glimmer of inspiration. For so many years I stuck to the same style—beaded statement necklaces. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my beaded statement necklaces, but I really wanted to step outside of the box and do something completely different. The only problem was, I didn’t know what. I didn’t know what color schemes I wanted to do, what style…I felt lost! Even when I thought about nixing trying anything new and sticking to what I know, I couldn’t even so much as think of a single color I wanted to use; I felt like I had already done everything.

On one of my trips to the jewelry supply store, I came across some earthy pendants that stood out to me, and the neutrality of these pendants really resonated with me. I decided to use chains instead of beads like I normally would, and for the first time in months I felt that creative spark return! But of course, being the person I am, these pieces would still have to be sophisticated, bold, and eye-catching! As soon as that inspiration hit, the floodgates opened and I ended up revisiting my love of beaded necklaces, while still dipping my toe into something new. I ended up with a very eclectic mix this season, but either way, both styles are undoubtedly me. The lesson I learned here is to let go and let inspiration come when it comes, instead of forcing things to happen on an unnatural timetable. Creativity rarely flows under pressure.
